Ready Player One is one of those books that I had heard about and always wanted to read. Heck, I actually thought I had read it at one point or another because my memory plays tricks on me. When the movie came out, I knew I had to see it because it was such a great book. Then I saw the movie and realized that it wasn’t a story I was familiar with, which seemed odd since I thought I had read it. Now, I wonder what book I had read that made me think it was Ready Player One.
Anyway, the movie actually got me really interested into wanting to read the book and experience the full story, so I bought the book shortly after I saw the movie and then never read it. I actually have to explanation for why I didn’t read it, but I came across it this past week and got mad at myself for not reading it, so I read it. Let me tell you, I’m glad I finally read it. It was such a great book! The movie was good, but this book was amazing.
As someone who enjoys games and especially some of the classics, this book was made for me. In fact, I could easily be Wade, so reading this book was like reading an alternate timeline of myself. I had a hard time putting this book down because I wanted to see what would happen next in their battle to find the egg. The suspense in this from time to time really got to me, and I found myself staying up late at night to just get to a decent part where I felt I could finally log off … err … I mean stop reading.
I’m kind of sad that the book ended honestly. I know it had to end at some point, but man I hated it when I saw the Acknowledgements section because I knew the story was over. I will probably read this one again at some point, which is rare for me because I’m always trying to read new stuff, but that is how good this one is. I have actually just found a new #1 book, which just unseated my former #1, Landover: Magic Kingdom For Sale, and Landover has been my #1 for close to 20 years, so congrats Ernest Cline!
With that said, I highly recommend this book. It has 80’s references, it has a bunch of nerdy gaming references, it has action, it has romance, and it even has a mech battle! If any of that sounds appealing to you then you must read this book, even if you think you have already read it.
